On April 2, the History Museum of Armenia hosted the closed opening of the exhibition “Historical Return: A Medieval Masterpiece from London.”
The exhibition presents one of the rare examples of medieval Armenian woodcarving – a wooden door panel of an Armenian church dated 1188, which will now become part of the museum’s permanent collection.
The exceptional artifact was acquired at an international auction in London by decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, within the framework of the state program for the acquisition and repatriation of cultural property implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, through the Cultural Development Foundation.
Among the attendees were Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Zhanna Andreasyan, Mayor of Yerevan Tigran Avinyan, Deputy Minister Alfred Kocharyan, Director of the Cultural Development Foundation Karen Avetisyan, as well as representatives of the cultural sector.
Accompanied by the Director of the History Museum of Armenia David Poghosyan and the Head of the Department of Archaeology and Numismatics Astgh Poghosyan, the guests also visited the exhibition “The Unique Stela of Lernahovit: The Revelation for Generations,” which presents a tetrahedral monument discovered in 2025 in the Lernahovit community of Lori Province, dating back to the 5th-7th centuries.
The exhibition “Historical Return: A Medieval Masterpiece from London” will open to the public at the History Museum of Armenia starting April 3. Admission with a general museum ticket.
