INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPATRIATION MOVEMENT
The 1946-1948 repatriation movement is one of the most important events of the modern history of the Armenian people, having an immense impact on the demographic, sociocultural, and economic life in Armenia, as well as on the processes of reconstructing national identity and state-building.
The History Museum of Armenia is organizing the “Layers of Repatriation” international conference, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the great repatriation movement, which aims to rediscover museum collections related to the topic and discuss the different social, cultural, and historical layers of the phenomenon.
The conference will place on July 2nd – 4that the History Museum of Armenia. The presentations will include the following themes:
• Waves of mass repatriation (1921-1936, 1946-1948, 1962, and later waves)
• The issue of organizing repatriation and admitting repatriates to Armenia
• Challenges faced by repatriates and their gradual integration into Soviet Armenian society
• The political-ideological, social, and cultural impact of repatriation on the modern history of Armenia and the Diaspora
• The comparison of the “remainers” and later “emigrants”: organizational motives and failures
• The response to repatriation and later emigration in Armenia and the Diaspora
• Repatriation in post-Soviet Armenia
• Repatriation as cultural heritage in museum collections
• The emigration of repatriates within oral history
• Methodological issueswithin the study of stories of repatriation
