On 21 January at 17:00, as part of the international collaboration undertaken by the History Museum of Armenia and within the framework of the permanent exhibition “Armenia between the 6th and 4th centuries BC”, the Museum will host a remarkable lecture entitled “Luxury and Power: At the Edge of the Achaemenid World”. At the invitation of the History Museum, Dr James Fraser, Director of Jerusalem’s W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, former Curator of the Middle East Department of the British Museum, and Curator of the 2023 International Exhibition “Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece” at the British Museum, will give a lecture. The lecture traces the development of distinctive styles of material culture characteristic of the Achaemenid period, as well as the peculiarities of their manifestation on the territory of Armenia. These styles were copied by rulers throughout the Persian Empire and blended with local traditions to create new styles of luxury representing political prestige. We would like to remind you that several famous objects for display in the British Museum’s 2023 exhibition “Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece” were on loan from Armenian museums.
The lecture “Luxury and Power: At the Edge of the Achaemenid World” will be held in English with simultaneous translation into Armenian.
Admission with a museum ticket with access to the permanent exhibitions.
