Marat Boris Gharayan (June 1, 1972, Stepanakert – October 16, 2020, Fizuli)
In 1989, Marat graduated from secondary school No. 3 of Stepanakert. In 1995, he graduated from the “History and Foreign Language” faculty of the Stepanakert Pedagogical Institute. He was admitted in 1998 and graduated in 2003 from the “Law” Department of the Faculty of Humanities of ASU. In 1992 – 1993, he worked in the NKR Military Prosecutor’s Office. In 1992 – 1994, Marat participated in the First Artsakh War. In 1993 – 1995, he worked at the NKR military tribunal, and in 1995 as the head of the State Department of National Security of the National Security Service of the NKR. In 2018-2020, he worked as an assistant to the chairman of the Commission on Prisoners, Hostages, and Missing Persons attached to the NKR NSS. In 2020, he worked in the Ministry of Military Patriotism, Youth, Sports, and Tourism of the Republic of Artsakh as the head of the Military Patriotism Department. He volunteered as an NSS reservist in the Second Artsakh War and participated in the military operations started by the Azeri-Turkish military and political leadership against the Republic of Artsakh. He fought battles in Fizuli, in the area called Kargabazar. On October 15, 2020, he was wounded in the leg, but did not surrender and, continuing the unequal battle, blew himself up with a grenade, killing a group of Azeris with him.
The remains of reserve Lieutenant Colonel Marat Gharayan of the National Security Service of the Republic of Artsakh were found seven months after his death by DNA analysis, and his burial took place on May 13, 2021. He was awarded the “Fatherland and Faith” medal and the “Combat Cross” 1st degree order of the Republic of Artsakh. He was a married father of four children.
