Ani, inhabited since ancient times, gained exceptional importance in the Middle Ages, being declared the capital of Armenia in 961. It was not only the political and spiritual centre of the country but also an important environment for the development of urban life, economy, crafts and trade, culture and art. Archaeological excavations led by N. Marr in 1892-1893 and 1904-1917 made a significant contribution to the study and popularisation of the history and culture of Ani. The Ani archaeological expedition became a school that graduated prominent scholars H. Orbeli, N. Buniatyan, A. Kalantar, N. Adonts, and others.
