On June 9, took place an international conference “Source Study Value of the Coin” was launched at the History Museum of Armenia, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the issue of the national currency of the Republic of Armenia, the dram.
Davit Poghosyan, Director of the History Museum of Armenia, Astghik Marabyan, Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Folk Crafts of the RA MoESCS, and Hovhannes Khachatryan, Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia, made the opening speech.
In his speech, D. Poghosyan, Director of the Museum, highlighted the importance of the conference, noting that the museum is a major numismatic centre in the region, whose collections were formed in the early 1920s.
Astghik Marabyan, Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Folk Crafts of the RA MoESCS, mentioned the importance of the role of museums in the 21st century, adding that they are institutions that preserve, popularize and pass on cultural heritage to generations, and the presented topic is relevant at all times, because the coin is important evidence of the country’s statehood and history; and Hovhannes Khachatryan, Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia, spoke about the creation and establishment of the Armenian coin, emphasizing the importance of having a national currency.
The ceremonial opening was followed by a panel discussion with the participation of Nzhdeh Yeranyan, Deputy Director of the Museum, Bagrat Asatryan, Ph.D., economist, former Chairman of the Central Bank, and Gevorg Tumanyan, Head of Currency Issue and Numismatics Centre at the Central Bank, who presented the importance of own currency in the establishment of the economy and the period and events preceding and following the introduction of the national currency.
More than forty participants from Armenia and abroad made reports at the conference.
