HISTORY MUSEUM OF ARMENIA

Sheathed Dagger

The hilt and sheath are fully silver-plated and nielo. A snake with its tongue out is depicted on the reverse side of the sheath. Above this is a date and inscription: 1895, SEROSH E. Daggers with the image of a snake on the blade are known from Artik Nos. 409 and 432 tomb excavations. Another dagger with the image of a two-headed snake is known from the Lchashen excavations. The given examples show that the snake in this case acts as a symbol of power and a guardian.
